Which Land Rover Models Qualify for Section 179?

What is Section 179?

According to Section179.org, Section 179 allows businesses to deduct the cost of qualifying equipment, which includes certain vehicles, in the same tax year that the equipment is utilized for the business. This means that the business can benefit right away without having to wait for gradual depreciation benefits.

However, there are limits. According to the IRS, Section 179 deduction dollar limits for 2025 are the following:

  • Maximum Section 179 Expense Deduction: $1,250,000. According to the IRS, "This limit is reduced by the amount by which the cost of section 179 property placed in service during the tax year exceeds $3,130,000."
  • Maximum Section 179 Expense Deduction for SUVs: $31,300.
  • Special Depreciation Allowance: 40%. According to the IRS, this applies to "certain qualified property acquired after September 27, 2017, and placed in service after December 31, 2024, and before January 1, 2026."

In order to qualify for Section 179, property, such as a vehicle, must be used more than 50% for business. In addition, the property must have been purchased, not gifted or inherited. For more information, please visit IRS.gov and be sure to confirm details and eligibility with a tax professional.

Land Rover Vehicles Section 179 Deduction Eligibility 

According to Section179.org, Section 179 vehicles fall into three categories:

  • Vocational vehicles of any weight or vehicles over 14,000 pounds.
    These types of vehicles can qualify for the full Section 179 deduction.
  • Passenger vehicles (SUVs, trucks, and vans) that have a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) of 6,000-14,000 pounds.
    These types of vehicles are limited to a maximum Section 179 expense deduction of $31,300.
  • Passenger vehicles (traditional cars) that have a GVWR of under 6,000 pounds.
    These types of vehicles also have a deduction limit. Although official IRS information for this limit in 2025 is not yet available, Section179.org estimates this first-year limit to be $20,400 when the vehicle is used 100% for business.
